VMPlayer on Ubuntu (debian) Linux

Linux, Ubuntu

Talk about it in our Forums

I've been toying around with VMPlayer a little bit over the past week or so and it's a whole lot of fun. I've gotten to check out a number of operating systems I wouldn't normally have the chance to look at without constantly wiping and reloading a machine.

I won't go into writing a tutorial about installing VMPlayer, because you can find an interesting one over at the Ubuntu Forums. Simply follow the first several steps if you want to install the VM, and if you have a copy of WinXP or Win2k hanging about you can use the rest of the instructions to install it as a guest os.

So far I've managed to run the following on my laptop:

  1. Windows XP – runs pretty smooth, I haven't gotten sound working yet but the glitch is on my end, I believe. I'm able to install such products as Adobe Acrobat, Office 2k3, etc.
  2. CentOS 4.3 Server – nothing special here, no GUI and not a lot to do with it, so that's been blown away.
  3. SUSE 10 with KDE3 – by far one of the neater linux distros I've played around with. I'm not all that familiar with KDE, so it's been something of a learning experience.
  4. Embedded DSL – DSL is just plain cool. Not much point in VMing it as I can run it under linux as a guest os anyway, but it had to be done for the sake of doing it.
  5. RedHat Core 5 – impressive distro using Gnome 2.14.
  6. Syllable – Another tiny little linux. This thing boots faster than any other guest os I've tried. Still in the process of being finished (version 0.6a is what I am using) but pretty slick so far.

That's what I've been trying out. With the exception of the windows software, all of the above images are available for free from the web. A google search for VMPlayer Image turned them all up. VMPlayer is also available for free, and not just for linux either. It runs on Windows as well.

I'd recommend trying it out if for no other reason than it's a damned cool thing to do. Nothing is quite as strangely fun (in a geek way of course) as using gFTP to transfer files between your host os and your guest os.

I've included a couple of snapshots below. WinXP, SUSE 10 and Syllable.

VMPlayer is great, almost great, I found a small problem, I am using it on my Ubuntu PC, and when I am booting from VMP windows I can’t hear any sounds, it is not detecting my sound card.

Skip Hop Studio Diaper Tote Handbag is awesome. So many wallets – and not those modest, worthless pockets, either. Almost all of the actual pockets tend to be a fantastic dimension and actually support maintain everything organized. The handles are a great length and fit nicely over the shoulder; the handle straps also remain place on my arm, which is actually critical when you are carrying a newborn. The bag looks wonderful, as well. Not as well fancy, but not as well casual. (I have it in black) The material is soft (can’t believe of a far better word) so it’s effortless to squeeze in to tight spaces – but yet it’s sturdy. I have a Fleurville Lexi carry and I really like it, too, but that handbag is type of stiff. I think that Skip*Hop may become my daily handbag. It’s a little bit large – so if you’re not really in to substantial hand bags this may well be much better as an over-night baby diaper handbag.

Thanks God that those days are gone, and we don’t have to look for a way of getting a soft working under ubuntu, it comes as a pack with all you need installed but if still you need smth else well you use the WINE tool and install easy as 1,2,3 even software designed for Windows.

I used it on Windows 7 to install Windows XP, and Ubuntu. This software needed XP to continue to use HP Precision Scanjet Scanner for which there are no drivers that run Windows 7.This was very easy to install & use, and works perfectly.
