Linux, Reviews, Ubuntu

Talk about it in our Forums

This post will kick off the newest addition to this blog – Reviews!  That's right, I'll take the newest and greatest software/hardware you've never heard about, and tell you why you need to either aquire it, or aviod it like a swarm of giant, nattering fleas.  Let the fun begin!

name: Grip

Type: Software

Cost: Free
Purpose: Make a legal copy of a CD for backup purposes, or to listen to on your computer.

Yesterday I had the occasion to use Grip to rip a CD. I hadn't used it before, in fact, I hadn't really heard of it before so I wasn't quite sure what to expect.

The install was, as with many things Ubuntu, very easy. To install it simply type:

sudo apt-get install grip cdparanoia lame

You may already have cdparanoia install, in which case, omit it from your apt statement.

So now you've got it installed, fire up that bad no-gender-specific-software and lets convert a cd to MP3's!

Overall, Grip performs very well.  All I modified on the setup was going to the Config tab, then the Rip tag and ensure that the ripper drop down was set to Cdparanoia.  Then off to the encode tag to set the encoder to Lame.

I used Grip to make a copy of my fast failing Bad News cd, and it performed very well.  After about 20 minutes, I had all of the songs set up in MP3 format in their own directory with accurate tags.

I'd recomend using Grip on your linux machine.

geek out.
