Brightside has been around for a little while, but I’ve just discovered it and it’s a great tool for switching virtual desktops.
I’ve configured it so that when I move my mouse to the far right or left side of my monitor(s) it switches to the next virtal desktop, wrapping around so that if I move right 4 times, I end up back on my first desktop. I’m also using Xinerama to enable two monitors, and Brightside with Xinerama ignores the sides that ‘join’ my two seperate monitors, so I can still easily move between physical monitors. Now I can easily move through virtual monitors as well!
In Ubuntu, simply do the following to install it.
sudo apt-get install brightside
Get it running by typing:
brightside
Once it’s installed, you can configure it by typing:
brightside-properties
You can have it start when you boot by going to System-> Preferences-> Sessions and then the Startup Programs tab. Add a new startup program and type ‘brightside’.

[...] Not only is Beryl extremely easy on the eyes but I’ve found myself using it for desktop management as I’d not used brightsides or the standard Linux multi-desktop setup. With my little 12†screen desktop switching allows me to run several apps at once in a way which is easy and fun to switch between them without the windows piling on top of each other. And if I ‘lose’ some open program, I simply press F8, click on it and go on my merry way. I also love being able to use my mouses’ scroll wheel in the corners of my screen to switch desktops. It’s a productive use of my space and time. And I caught several people on the train looking over my shoulder as I did it. [...]
