I don’t know why but the phrase eye-candy always makes me think of accidentally getting pixie stick contents blown into my eye. Ouch! Anyway, here’s another eye-candy (wipes tears away) trick for your box.
Say you want to change your login screen. You’re tired of the brown look, or the defaults just aren’t cutting it for you. Well there’s a simple way to do this.
First, let’s find a theme we like. Go to the Gnome Art page and browse around until something catches your eye. When you’ve found something you like, download it to your desktop.
Now you should have something like UberFunkyIamSoCool.tar.gz sitting there. Let’s add it to our choices for login screens and then make it the one we use.
If you’re into GUIs, then go to System-> Administration-> Login Window. If you’ve got a CLI open, type:
sudo gdmsetup
You’ll start on the Local tab, which is where you’ll want to be for this. You’ll also see a selection of login screens that come default with Ubuntu. To add the one you just downloaded, simply click the Add button, and browse to your desktop (/home/username/Desktop). Select it and click the Install button. It should show up in your selections now. It’s alphabetical so you may have to scroll down.
Now select the radio button next the the screen you want. You can also add a custom Welcome Message and select what’s on the menu bar. For your custom welcome message I suggest changing it to “Have you surfed ArsGeek yet?” or depending on your choice of login screens, “God my eyes they burn!”
Click close when you’re done customizing. The next time you log in, you’ll see your new selections.

I typed the command at tty and went in through the GUI and both times I end up with a screen only giving me options to “Show screen to login” or to “Automatically login.”

First target price is set at the next mayor line of resistance at 19,00 USD whereas the stop-loss order should be placed shortly below the lower trend line.
