UbuntuLite is a stripped down version of Ubuntu for use on older machines and/or by folks who just aren’t computer savvy. My Grandmother comes to mind.

So not just to make a small linux as this has been done before (Puppy Linux, Damn Small linux, the Rule Project). Nor to make a useable linux based desktop Operating system (that has been done with Ubuntu Linux, Beatrix) The idea is to bring the power of Ubuntu to the typical users of Legacy hardware (ie the grandma who gets an old P2 set up for her but does not know how to use it).

Yeah, I like that hardware reqs too.
As for helping Grandmothers and such? Well, I know of at least one Grandmother who has a P2 running windows 98 and is a support nightmare. She’s going to move to Linux (read: Ubuntu) soon and a nice, light version that will run on that hardware and allow her to check email/browse the web while I can ssh in and fix problems seems ideal.

Ubuntulite was inactive for a few months but is now back on track. It has been restructured and uses the openbox window manager. It still runs well on a 75 mhz pentium with just 32 mb of ram. Version 0.6 (feisty) is in need of testers.
