Got a folder in Ubuntu that you’d like to share? Now you can do it with ease.

I’ve got a folder on my desktop called ‘Element’. This has nothing to do with sharing folders, but this particular folder contains pictures of my new Honda Element, which is a wonderful way to get around.

So, I want to share the images in this folder with folks throughout my workplace and beyond. How to do this?

Right click on the folder, and choose Share Folder.

If you don’t have the proper tools installed (mainly SMB and NFS) it will ask you for permission to install them. Enter your password and let your computer do it’s thing.

Once all the proper stuff is installed, you’ll be given a choice - Share through Windows networks (SMB) or Unix networks (NFS). Choose how you’d like your folder shared and you’re done.

Not quite you also need to add a samba user ie..

    sudo smbpasswd -a username

Then when you connect to the share you can enter in the username and password you used in the above command to connect.

I followed your instructions and nothing happens. Doesn’t matter if I choose NFS or Samba. When I use another Ubuntu machine, how do I access the shared folder on the first Ubuntu machine? What’s the method to *get into* the shared folder?

On Windows or Mac, the shares just show up under Network/Networking/Shares. But “Places > Network” has no share listed in Ubuntu.

this is why you have 1% market share, when someone puts up a guide it almost never works, tried 3 guides and it doesnt work, thank god i tested this crap operating system on a vm so i can unload this crap with ease

PD. if you are going to put up a guide, at least write more than 25% of the required things to make it usefull, this one piece was the worst of all guides for this subject ive read

Please take a look at this if your full read/write permission insists.
