SellABand, a German startup is starting to gain some traction in the world. It looks interesting.
Essentially, artists create a profile, upload up to 3 demos and then hope to attract 5000 fans.
Fans find artists that they like, and buy a chunk of them for $10.
5000 fans at $10 each = $50,000 in the name of the artist. At that point, SellABand brings in the AR and Production folks and the artist gets to record an album.
Each ‘Believer’ (someone who put $10 into your cause) gets a limited edition CD sent to their homes. The songs recorded are put online for free.
As artists grow in popularity and more of their music is downloaded, the more known they become. Regular editions of their CDs are made available for purchase (through the web, at shows, etc.). The artist gets 50% of all CD sales. The ‘believers’ divide up the rest.
I’ll be following this method closely, it sounds like a very interesting way to launch a music career. With the fans involved, you’ve got a huge marketing force – the more albums you sell, the more money you and your fans make, the happier you both are.

As likely to skip school with no excuse or have poor grades than those who didn’t play them.
