Linux Quickie – force your trash to empty on Debian/Ubuntu

swtrash.jpgIf you have something that’s stuck in your trash and you just can’t seem to get rid of it, this single command line should help.

sudo rm -fr /home/username/.Trash

Replace the username bit with your actual user name.  This will forcefully empty your trash, but your Gnome or KDE trash icon may still show something in it.

I’ve found that the next time you refresh Gnome (i.e. CTRL-ALT-BKCPACE), reboot or otherwise empty something out of your trash, this will correct itself.

Thanks for the tip. You can use “~” as your home directory.

Nice tip, thanks. I figured there was a Trash directory somewhere but I could never find it.

How do you simply empty the trash normally–not when there is a problem?

I usually use a Mac and my eeePC is confusing me on this issue. I see a trash can and th4re is stuff in it, now I need to empty it. Surely there’s a way from the GUI w/o resorting to a sudo line?

  4. arsgeek Says:

Generally you right click on it and choose “empty trash”.

Aaah thanks, I rarely use a Windows PC and that’s not a Mac convention. Of course, I then had to determine the touch pad equivalent (the Eee doesn’t have a mouse and I saw no reason to add one) — which was the Alt button to the right of the touchpad plus the clicker. Worked.

I have had my Eee for two weeks and just discovered this wonderful forum from which to learn about this OS.

How do you like the Eee? There’s no practical reason for me to get one – yet I really want one!

  7. Irene Friedman Says:

I am taking a 23 day trip to Australia and New Zealand, and there’s a strict 44 pound per person checked baggage limit and 15 pound carry on limit. So a 7 lb laptop is too heavy. And a Mac Airbook was not in the budget. Hence the 2 pound Eee.

I paid $299. on Amazon and I’m quite satisfied. It’s very sturdy because of the stubby shape and the feels way less fragile than any other laptop I’ve had.

I can do email and Skype and which will keep me in touch with my children and grandchildren, which is why I really wanted a computer for the trip.I can surf the web if we have time and want to research things on the trip. My husband can upload his photos to it too. (That was amusing. I insisted he try yesterday rather than on the trip. He connected the USB device to the camera and the computer as he would o a Mac and nothing happened. after several frustrating minutes I read a web page from the Eee site and mentioned the magic words “flash card” and he disconnected the cable and pulled the memory card from the camera and put it into the Eee and voila…the pictures were transferred.

In real life I can see toting it to meetings where I don’t want to bother with anything more cumbersome. It wouldn’t be ideal as a main computer- I don’t know if the track pad and clicker would the as much use as those on my Macbook endure, for example. But for the price of a fancy phone or Blackberry or iPod it does so much more and has a real keyboard for taking notes or composing thoughts.

Of course I still can’t drag text from a Web app or email to the desktop like on a Mac, but that may be because I’m a Linux novice. I downloaded programs and then couldn’t expand them into a usable form…but maybe in a few months I’ll get beyond the idiot stage! I am the tech support person for a bevy of clueless friends who have Macs and now I equally clueless on this new platform.

Anyhow, for the price, I recommend the Eee.

See Irene, you’re not helping. I have no major trips planned in the near future and already have a crop of laptops at home. But now I want an Eee even more!
