This is a Zonbox from Zonbu. It’s a solid state computer (no moving parts) which is silent, runs Linux, is green friendly and works right out of the box.
Would you use it?
How about if I told you it was $99, plus $12.95 a month and it would back up all of your data for you. How about then?
I’ll have some more information for you all shortly as I’m expecting a unit to arrive in a week or so, along with a beta test invite for their software. I’ll be not only beta testing this, but reviewing the unit so that we all can get a sense of what it’s like.
Personally I like the idea of a green computer with no moving parts (i.e. no noise to contend with) that also comes with an account which you can access (along with all of your data) from anywhere there’s a network connection. They price includes break/fix (it seems) along with a free return of the unit when you’re done with it so it will be properly recycled.
The idea is great but I’m not sure folks will go for the pricing. Would you spend $254.40 for a years worth of computing if your data was backed up and your computer would just work, right out of the box? Is this the beginning of my predictions from way back, when I said that eventually computers would be given away and the OS would be a service delivered over a network?
What’s your take on it?
