I don't think you really need something like Zonbox. Custom made computers are the best option, because you make it by yourself or an expert does it for you.

The price for the Zonbox itself is convenient, but I don't want to make monthly payments for backups.

Matt,

You hit the nail on the head. A long time ago I predicted that hardware would eventually be given away free, like AOL disks. Perhaps not top of the line, hobbiest or gamer hardware, but something akin to the Zonbox.

You'd then pay for a subscription and have all of your data, applications and whatnot served out to you.

The Zonbu and other companies like this are the first iteration of this trend.

I definitely see this as the direction average home PCs are going. A solid state disk that allows you to just boot up and get to the Internet. With online office apps, photo and video editors, etc. there is going to be less and less a need to have all of these services localized to your home PC. Not to mention, less to worry about with viruses, software updates, purchasing newer versions etc. This device may not do exactly that, but a very good start.

We reviewed a device like it, the <a href="http://pcburn.com/review-NorhTec_Microclient_Jr-1.php" rel="nofollow">Microclient Jr.</a> a bit back.

Coincidentally, the hardware is from an OEM out of Taiwan. You can get a wide array this type of hardware from them at very good prices.

Are you trying to get me to reformat my Zonbox? ;)

It's all done via a flash card. So, if you have something that can read/write to a flash card and have experience installing Linux on one you could get yourself a handy little box.

Still month to month plan. But you're right, after reading the commitment page on the site I found this: "In case that you are not satisfied with our service, you can keep the device and get a refund of your remaining subscription balance minus the prorated portion of your Zonbu hardware rebate."

Altough I don't see anywhere if you can format or install other os... Maybe arsgeek can clarify that point! :P

They sell it without restrictions for $249. Check out the pricing page: "With month to month plan, Zonbu is $249."

I like the idea, but I would like an option of buying the machine and not subscribe to anything, even if it means paying 500$ for it. I would like total control over it, so if I feel like it, I can turn it into a mythtv frontend box or even dual boot it.

I really don't like the whole giving my files to other people to protect, isn't that why google faces some public pressure now? The diference being google isn't charging for keeping your gmail and other type of files protected. And one can argue but google can use that information to exploit you, then I ask what's keeping Zonbu from doing the same?

I do like the hardware a lot...
I'm planning on building a solid state box myself, with an EPIA board, a compact flash for storage, but that will cost about 600$... so sell the zonbox without restrictions for 500$ and you have a client!

I'm torn about that myself. It's not just paying to save your files though, it's also paying for updates, upgrades and general ease of use. Particularly if you're not a computer person.

Software as a service (SaaS).

For me, this thing is cool, and may be a great way to keep a family connected. If something goes wrong, you reboot! For a non-computer type person, this may be a godsend.

I could use something like this as my server, and maybe have a separate NAS. the whole paying to save my files thing is a bit silly, i'd rather carry them around with me than have to download them from another server in another country each time I want to look at them
