Have you ever glanced over at someone else using Ubuntu 7.10 and said to yourself “woah, they’ve got all the COOL stuff!” No? Er… neither have I. But, if you would like to get some cool stuff, here’s how you can enable extra repositories, like the non-free and Multiverse areas.
First, you’ve got to open Synaptic, the package manager for Ubuntu. Go to System-> Administration-> Synaptic Package Manager. You’ll be prompted for your password.
Once Synaptic is open, go to Settings at the top and then Repositories.
Check off whatever you’d like. If you want to be able to obtain tons of stuff, check them all off (provided you’re okay with the legality of it all, which is a whole different discussion).
While you’re here, you may want to look at some packages that are coming down the pipe for Ubuntu. If that’s the case, you can click on the Updates tab and then check off “Pre-Release Updates”. This will give you access to packages that are proposed but not yet approved for Ubuntu. It’s always possible that you’ll run into problems using these packages but I’ve been pretty good with them so far.
Once you’re done, click the Reload button in Synaptic to download the latest and greatest package info and you’re ready to go. After reloading you may be prompted to do a software upgrade as well, if newer packages are available.

At least some options in Ububtu are normal and you don’t have to write hundreds of lines of code.

Using unsupported updates might be risky, but without you will never get a lot of Linux based cool stuff.
