ArsGeek, Hardware, Reviews

Talk about it in our Forums

portable.gifWe’re going to be looking at a bunch of new gadgets here on ArsGeek in the near future. Things ranging from tiny SSD hard drives to ultraportable computers and all that fall in between. In my reviews I’ll be adding a new descriptive factor.

The YAG factor. Will whatever it is that I’m looking at add to my Yet Another Gadget factor? As it is now, I have my little MP3 player that goes everywhere with me, as well as my cell phone. On a work day (and what day isn’t a work day, really) I’ve also got my Archos PMP for movie watching, my laptop for getting work done and a least three or four random USB flash drives kicking around. How many more things am I going to be able to fit on my person? And what do I really need to carry?

If a new gadget comes my way and it replaces an old one, that’s fine. At least I haven’t gone up in the number of things I’m carting around with me. If new gadget comes in and replaces more than one of my old ones, well that’s going to rate pretty high in my book, unless of course that gadget it huge. My Laptop could fill in as my video/audio player as well but it’s a real pain to use when walking home.

Look for YAG factors in upcoming reviews. As your thinking about a product you can use this to take into account how much it’s going to weigh you down, what it’s multifunction capability is and whether or not it will be worth toting around.

[...] YAG factor on this little stand is pretty low. It’s not something I’d carry with me every day [...]

[...] YAG factor? That’s a tough one. It’s either going to be high, or low, depending. If this is your primary computer that you’re traveling with, then it’s going to be very low. You can effectively leave your PMP at home - this thing will play your videos, your music, display your pictures, (in Powerpoint if you want to get evil), browse the web and handle the functions of your computer. If you’re popping it in your bag with your laptop, your phone, your MP3 player and your PMP then it’s pretty high. although unless you’re like me and reviewing it you probably won’t be doing that.
