Got a band but can’t afford to shoot a video? Use public CCTV cameras and then demand the footage!

Culture, Other Geeks, Video

Talk about it in our Forums

The Get Out Clause are an upcoming UK band who are currently unsigned.  They took a brilliant and I’m sure soon to be much copied method to producing their own video.  Unable to hire a production crew for a standard 1980’s era MTV music video, they performed their music in front of 80 of the 13 million CCTV “security” cameras available in England, including one on a bus.

They then used Britain’s Data Protection Act to request the footage that was shot of them.  Grab some decent and inexpensive video editing tools (say. . . an iMac) and presto!  They got themselves a unique and in my opinion quite interesting music video.

Haha, nice. But you’re calling the iMac an inexpensive editing tool? $2,000+ isn’t exactly inexpensive…

  3. thetruth Says:

Brilliant, fucking brilliant. Now if we can only get a band that doesn’t suck to do this we will be on our way!!!

  4. arsgeek Says:

True, but have you seen how much Michael Bay charges to shoot your video?

For that price you could buy 100 iMacs. . . and blow up 99 of ‘em just like Michael!

  5. wholesale Says:

Absolutely brilliant and innovative. Too bad the band sucks.

  6. TheGabe Says:

Quite a cool way of making an inexpensive music video, shame about the “subtle” mac plug, and about the crapness of the band, but cool idea nonetheless.

Who said they have to be using a new iMac? I’m editing video on an elderly G4 iMac that cost me NZ$560 (UKSt220 or so). Sure, it’s not blisteringly fast, but it can cope and iMovie is a delight to use. ;^)

Very interesting idea for filming a music video. I once saw something like this done in a mall where a “movie” was filmed this way.

Thank you. I was skeptical when I saw it and had to arch a brow. Thanks for the article link.

PR stunt but a brilliant PR stunt because it worked.

  12. Recruitment Process Outsourcing Says:

Pretty genius idea. But how did they know where to get the footage?

  13. James Says:

Simple. Just ask the owners of the venue stating that the movie is effectively a copyrighted product :)

brouhaha.. loll. lovely point conveyed. I like the same way to do like Irish here in band. But render to think more ways then CCTV. Because it has some time consuming point. Anyway thanks for the article links.
