The Bridge Across the Uncanny Valley

Checkout this awesome video describing Image Metrics’ animation process!  Image Metrics is credited for facial animations in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Devil May Cry 4, and others.

Stunning, right?  Could you even tell that Emily wasn’t real?

One of the primary hurdles that Image Metrics faces on a daily basis is the Uncanny Valley.  The Uncanny Valley is a term that refers to the observed revulsion of people viewing objects demonstrating near lifelikeness.  You have experienced the Uncanny Valley any time you’ve been creeped out by a baby doll.

The new video of Emily shows the progress animation studios have made towards surmounting the Uncanny Valley.  If it weren’t for the end of the video, viewers may not be able to tell that Emily isn’t a real woman.

I could pick it out but I have an eye for it. That was really impressive.

    Wow.
Could not see the difference. That was impressive… and…. well… creepy.
I don’t know how Emily could have looked more human!
