EGM, A Legend Fades Into The Night

I fear that as we tread further into the digital age we’ll be seeing more headlines like this for magazine publications. To quote Egon, from the Ghostbusters, “Print is Dead”.

As information becomes available faster, and faster over the internet most video game magazines have  been made obsolete. The ones that are still around are mere skeletons of the behemoth volumes that they used to be. It’s sad in a nostalgic sort of way. As I was making the header image for the post, I viewed numerous EGM covers from years past. I think there’s needs to be some kind of museum set up, as there’s so much history to be found on those hallowed covers.

In case you haven’t heard already, EGM and its online affiliate 1UP has been sold. Previously owned by Ziff Davis, the magazine was sold to UGO Entertainment Division who has decided to dump the 20 year old gaming magazine.

I don’t want to talk too much about the news, but I would like to look back at some of the issues and how they represent the history of gaming and how far we’ve come.

I found one image, from an issue that I remember way back in 1995. I remember it because it was the first time I’d seen anything about the Virtual Boy. Ha, I can remember getting so excited as it would be the first system to present a 3D image. Too bad they didn’t have anything in the issue about it burning your eye sockets out.

Let’s fast forward to November 2000, when the PS2 was unleashed onto the world for the first time. Doubling as a DVD player, it was one of the most groundbreaking ideas for its time. Combining a  video game system as a media player  might seem like standard fare today, but in 2000 it’s easily what made the PS2 so dominant.

R.I.P EGM- -

although we won’t be able to flip through pages anymore, you’ll never be forgotten. From the preview demo discs, to what I consider the pioneers of the video game review you’ll always be in our hearts.

I am 32 now and in my collection I have still have these comics. I still remember when my father do not like to see such kind of comics because according to him these kind of magazines give the birth to new kind of feelings which should not be in kid mind.

Now I have 5 year old son and now I am feeling the same way as my father did.

These posters reminded me my room’s wall. When I was kid I always bought these posters from my pocket money and post them on my wall. Mom never liked it.

There was competition among me and my friends to collect maximum posters. Aaahh those days … I wish they come again … :)

Such kind of photos always recall my childhood memory. I never spend my money on these kind of posters and always wanted to get these posters free from my friends or from my elder brother.

For that I will have to work for them … may be completing their home work or similar kind of things.
