Trust Sony to bringing new meaning to the word “ultraportable.” This week it launched the Vaio, a computer that runs Windows Vista and has an eight-inch screen, but weighs a good deal less than two pounds and can run for up to four or eight hours (depending on whether users stick with the standard battery or get a high-capacity version).
The Vaio runs on a 1.33GHz processor, and Sony offers a choice between 60 and 128 GB hard drives. Initial reviews of it are good to the point of being almost over the moon; you can, with little trouble, imagine the demo models not getting sent back to the manufacturer. And on that note, Sony is indeed taking orders now, with prices starting at about $900.

“Vaio” is a brand (or sub-brand… whatever) that Sony has been using for years, to cover a wide range of computer models. It is not correct to refer to a single model simply as “The Vaio”, and your readers will have great difficulty figuring out what model you mean.

They have done something which touch pad. Because in this model I did not see any touch pad any where and instead of touch pad there is some black spot is there. I do not know what is that but I do feel that whole touch pad shrink to that spot.
We will be able to tell more about this gem when they were came to the market … till date keep guessing.

Can I upgrade it to XP? Or Ubuntu? Vista is a deal-breaker for me.

I’d still prefer a Mac Air. BUT – has anyone seen the review of a Mac Air with Vista on? Interesting writeup.

@ TV 32 – Mac with windows Vista. If this is possible than Mac will rock the market of many Asian countries as well. Because Asian countries are using windows in 50% – 90%, and they wont able to use Mac because it did not support windows.
But this one is really a nice move and I am looking forward for this one as well.
This Sony device is really looking fabulous … I must say.

How exactly is this better than an eeePC? Slower processor, smaller hard disk, similar size, and more than twice the cost? I don’t get it?

How can I disable the sony vaio start up sound? Not the windows start up, but the actual start up / power on sound / jingle that is the first thing you hear when you turn on a vaio.

If we’re going to continue to have this level of services, we’re going to have to pay for it. I just don’t know the style that we’re used to can be funded at this level.
