Imagine watching Halloween (one of my fav horror films), and as Jamie sits in the closet waiting for Myers you feel a large jolt in your chest when Michael ends up busting through the closet. That’s the kind of feeling that Philips Electronics wants to bring consumers with their latest invention.
I couldn’t find an official name for the proposed jacket, so let’s call it ‘Mike Myers Movie Jacket Simulator’, or MMMJS for short. The jacket has 64 independent actuators that align across your entire upper body. Due to the amount of microprocessors that the jacket runs on, it doesn’t eat up as much power as you’d think. On two AA batteries, the jacket could run for a hour with all of the actuators running at once.
So, just what are the jacket’s makers trying to simulate? They want users to feel the tension that the actors/actresses are portraying on screen. Not necessarily the physical aspects, like getting punched or shot, but the mood, or what the character is feeling inside. Like I stated earlier with the Halloween example, the jacket’s portion of the chest might vibrate to simulate long, drawn breaths.
The actuators themselves are capable of cycling on and off 100 times per second. Below is a picture of the jacket, which to me looks like an exercise outfit. Hopefully, Phillips can develop something a little more up to date when it goes commercial.

If you want to keep up with news on the jacket, or wondering where it’s going to show up at next. You can find info at the IEEE-sponsored 2009 World Haptics Conference 2009

So in the future when we go to the movies we will be wearing rank, butter stained jackets that are still wet with sweat from the guy that was wearing it 10 minutes ago during whatever piece of crap Tyler Perry has showing? Just as long as they have fat guy sizes and and we can avoid any PeeWee Herman incidents i think it could be a pretty cool theater novelty, somewhere in between cardboard 3D glasses and IMaxx.
