Get Ready to Die – How Social Networking Will Kill You

You knew that it was too good to be true. All those blissful hours that you while away on Facebook will surely come back to haunt you. Studies are now proliferating, which attempt to prove that our fascination with social networking will kill us—slowly, painfully, but surely.

One evident danger of Facebook or MySpace activity is the increased risk from stalkers and predators. Kids and teens, and even those beyond their teenage years may unintentionally place themselves at risk from stalkers and sexual predators. Your friends aren’t the only people who may be looking at your profile, and MySpace is a stalker’s haven where personal photos and information are a click away.

Most interesting are those who claim the variety of health problems that come about from social networking. Aric Sigman, a highly acclaimed British scientist has inflamed and enraged the population through his books like Remotely Controlled: How Television is Damaging Our Lives. Sigman is to be respected for taking the minority stand on unpopular issues. His talks on alcohol and technology are equally scintillating, but it’s his comments regarding social networking with which we are interested. In his influential paper, “The Biological Implications of ‘Social Networking’” (Biologist, February 2009), Sigman attempts to prove his thesis that online social networking has biological effects that adversely alter our health. In other words: Facebook is bad for you. If you can navigate his medical verbiage, you will discover that online social networking subjects you to increased risk for cancer, genetic mutation, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, lupus, arthritis, strokes, and yes, even the common cold. His charts which trace the size of one’s social circle and its direct impact upon the diameter of one’s arteries are really quite insightful.

With a pointed application, Sigman closes his work with a haunting question: [Having considered th the enormous evidence of these calamitous effects] “we should now explain the true meaning of the term ‘social networking.’”

I will admit that I have a few Facebook friends, who don’t seem to sleep, judging by the constant regularity of their status updates, even in the odd hours of the morning, but I’m not sure it’s given them lupus…yet.

No doubt, it would do us all good to maintain an awareness of the way we spend our time. Few would argue that such an exercise could produce significant improvement, but you will have to judge personally whether or not you’re at an increased risk for dementia as a result of your Facebook activity.

  3. Nitin Reddy Katkam Says:

The reasoning behind why social networking causes health issues is probably the lack of physical exercise. You could make the same argument about watching TV all day.

On the positive side, it keeps you updated with recent happenings. How many times would you visit NYTimes or any other news website in a day? Using Twitter gets you news within a couple of minutes of occurrence!

  4. Property Says:

  10. Call Center Services Outsourcing Says:

I think it really depends on how addicted the person is. Facebook is a little difficult to tear oneself off of, what with so many interesting applications and games. I’ve even heard of people setting alarms so they can wake up in the morning and log in to get some reward early in the morning =/ But it all grows old after. I still think checking company emails poses a higher health risk. :D

social networking causes the common cold? it’s safe to say that if that’s true it’s because people who social network have friends. look up “Everything Bad is Good for You”

  13. Scott Says:

Awesome post! In addition to the obvious lack of exercise argument I would go deeper on the psychological front in that going overboard on social networking sites leads to “TMI” syndrome. We all need some mental sanctity and privacy in our lives. Only God should know everything about everyone under the sun :) .

Do you have encountered such situations:Have many of DVDs,especially some favorite, however you don’t know how to enjoy them on your portable devices or other hard disc.Such as on iPhone, iPhone 3G, Sony PSP, PS3, YouTube (web), iRiver PMP, Archos and PMPs;And also don’t know how to share them on the Youtube, myspace etc.
Well before I also met these issues, through my friends recommended,I knew the powerfulDVD Ripper for Mac.This kind of conversion software can help you solve above problems. In addition
to this,It provides you a series of powerful and easy to use movie edit functions such as triming, cropping frame size, merging, adjustin effect, choosing subtitle, etc.
So if you have the same trouble,I really hope my recommendation can help you.

  20. How to Crack PSP Says:

Yeah this whole social networking thing is getting ridiculous. People post literally everything they are doing, stuff that nobody even cares about. “I’m walking the dog, then I’m going to eat lunch and watch TV.”

I have quite a few friends who do this and seem to be on all the time and I really don’t see the fascination.

It is interesting to note that most men and even doctors (is it because they are male?) believe that most impotence causes stem from the psychological aspects or lifestyle aspects of a man’s life. But it is also interesting to note that 60% of the men that do go to their doctor with impotence problems end up being diagnosed with diabetes.

  26. All Inclusive Vacation Packages Says:

I think that you make a great point there towards the end of your article. We do need to make sure that we are spending our time wisely. I think it is incredibly easy to get sucked into one social networking site and look up only to realize that you’ve been on that one site for a huge chunk of time. Spread your time out evenly!

  28. Eden luxury Says:

face book etc is good , but we should not be crazy for giving so much time to it , there are many jobs which should be done in life , we should not waste our time in these kind of website , yes , we should use it for commmunications with eath others

  29. Justin Says:

Scary stuff. I think I fear the Big Brother effect more than anything. They have all our info, our photos, who we are friends with, what we like…

That database gets into the wrong hands and you’re screwed.

You’re right. it was in the news a few weeks ago that a sixteen year old had suicided because of some guy messaging her on Myspace. and so she suicided after all those mesages. in the messages the guy ‘ad told her that she was a very bad person and wasnt a good friend which made the girl get realy depressed. after investigations it came around that the guy was actually the neighbours of the girl who wanted to take out of her if their daughter was a bad kid. weird ! she dies coz of this?

Naturally, the more people you come in contact with the higher the chance to meet a nasty character. Just use common sense and don’t trust everything you see online.

    Very nice, intresting.

  34. led light bulbs Says:

Most of the people say that facebook site is very good for ranking the site but some people misuse this site even having proper security by them…

  35. Fernanda Says:

It´s interesting but I think that we have to control ourselves to not spend too much time in these kind of the social networking. Because everything that we do in excess is bad for us.
Besides this it can be good to comunicate with all the world, It´s an excelent midia to get information about products, services in genereal and that’s why some companies are advertising just in these kind of websites.

  36. Bianca Says:

I think it has good points and bad too. Social networking allows us to comunicate with other people for a job or to know how the people are. But in this kind of websites you lose your privacy, because, like you told, you don´t know who is looking your profile. It´s so scary for kids, because they are inocent and they don´t know normally how to defend themselves. Nowadays, children are so connected with social networking, that we need take care about this.

  37. Évelin Says:

Well, i understood all the things that the author said, but in my opinion having a social networking give us more advantages than disadvantages. When you get one, you can meet old friends, stay updated on the news. In short, you can comunicate yourself with all the world.
Logicaly, it depends on the personality of the person, you should know what you are doing and you should take care more with your children and naive people.

  38. Teixeira Says:

he said that social network will kill us, but he spent at least one hour writing this article in a (oh! my! god!) kind of social network… contradictions detected. but it’s fact that spending a lot of time with that will make you fat, because if you’re not exercising yourself and there are a lot of bad people looking at your profile and your life then. on the other hand, you keep in touch with the new things and all of your friends. i guess you should stop reading this and go play some sports! after you do that, i allow you to log in facebook again.

  39. Isabella Says:

It’s a good article, but I disagree with many things. I don’t believe that social networks will kill us. It can happen with some people, with the minority. But at one point I agree, when he says that we spend a lot of time on these social networks, and I think that’s the problem. bcause we don’t go out, meet some friends, do excercises…. It can be bad to our health.

  40. Football tips Says:

It does worry me when I see the amount of time kids these days spend on their laptops, I thought I was bad, but I really try to limit the amount of time spent online. Some kids I know will get in, every night, and just sit on the computer til bed. That cannot be healthy

  41. web developer argentina Says:

I think that interact in the proper and necessary precautions will not be difficult to live with the new technologies in general.

  42. Donetta Patrich Says:

Hi I loved your article. I believe that it is vital when talking about diabetes to at least refer to natural treatments that have been proven to be effective in managing high blood glucose. Various natural herbs can be including in a diabetics treatment that may help maintain a wholesome sugar level.

  43. hebe Says:

I totally agree with your opinions, coz sometime I really feel tired to communicate with my familiar or unfamiliar friends from daily life or from the internet. but I just want to stay alone.

  44. Shawn Says:

Social Networking, most games, and television are “mind numbing”, which contribute to lower intelligence. People need to continuously stimulate and challenge their brain. This is one proven way to help slow down or stop dementia.

Exercise (even sports or another physical recreational activity) is the way to help keep your body and mind healthy. This could also explain the immune system deficiency.

I would have to read the study to make my determination about biological effects, including increased risk of disease.

Technology itself is bad for your health. Electricity and electrical devices (even your computer) emit radiation in which could pose an increased risk to cancer. Using technology after an x-ray could increase your risk of cancer even more.

  45. matt Says:

It was a very nice idea! Just wanna say thank you for the selective information you have distributed.

  49. guest speaker Says:

I must say, as much as I enjoyed reading what you had to say, I couldnt help but lose interest after a while. Its as if you had a good grasp around the topic matter, but you forgot to include your readers. Perhaps you should think about this from additional than one angle. Or maybe you shouldnt generalise so much. Its better if you think about what others may have to say instead of just heading for a gut reaction to the subject. Think about adjusting your personal believed process and giving others who may read this the benefit of the doubt.

Sigman treatise on the impact of social networks is complete nonsense.
All his work is based only on lack of exercise and emerging from this related diseases.
We can say that watching television and using cell phones too injurious to health, but they became a daily attribute of our lives.
    This technological progress.
