“Of course I’m not wasting time on the web… I’m *transcribing*…”

Who would have thought that reCAPTCHA's were actually for something useful instead of an annoying and yet clever way to ensure you weren't a spammer?

Adam Savage Is a Geeky God

At the end of July, the H.O.P.E. (Hackers On Planet Earth) conference was held in New York.  One of the featured speakers was Adam Savage, co-host of the Mythbusters.  Savage talked about his geeky passion for creating and learning, and described (among other things) his personal recreation of a dodo skeleton.  He also took questions from the audience.

Frotz for the iPhone and iPod Touch!

It wasn't too long ago that I noticed a nerdcore rapper tackling the subject of text based adventure games.  Now it seems that the popular software (popular amongst us text based adventure game enthusiasts that is) Frotz has been ported to an Apple App!

How to run a dedicated Steam server on your Ubuntu box - Countestrike style

For a while now Valve through Steam have had a dedicated server for Linux from which you can launch your multiplayer fragfests.  I've recently started messing about with it and I've gotten Counter Strike, Counter Strike Source and Half Life multiplayer to launch off of it.  I'm still mucking about with server settings and finding statistics for it however I did not find a ton of documentation on this through Google so I decided to put up my notes here.

Book Review: The Way Toys Work

Did you know that the inventor of the erector set won an Olympic gold medal in the pole vault in 1908?  Or that the Slinky was named by thumbing through a dictionary looking for a word that sounded like the motion of a toy?  Or that (despite popular belief), Furbies do not listen for new words to add to their vocabularies (and therefore should never have been banned from government property)?  Neither did I, until I read The Way Toys Work:The Science Behind the Magic 8 Ball, Etch A Sketch, Boomerang, and More.

Archos 605 WiFi 160GB model again cheaper than normal at Amazon

Today appears to be the day of deals online.  Amazon.com again has the beautiful and much loved Archos 605 WiFi for about $70 off retail - that’s $328.71.  We reviewed the 605 WiFi (30GB model) a while back and personally, I still love this PMP. You can also turn it into a nice DVR for recording all of your TV shows buy purchasing the DVR station, which amazon has for just $78 - $20 less than retail as well.

Ambiance for the iPhone/iPod touch

In my continued quest to find interesting and useful apps from Apple’s App store I came across Ambiance.  It’s a fun coincidence that the two apps I downloaded first ended up #1 (Koi Pond) and #2 at the apps store for paid apps.  Both are $0.99 apps and both aren’t games. I find this trend very [...]

How to delete stuck folders and files from your trash in Ubuntu

Every now and again, I’ll find myself with some files sitting around in my trash that I can’t delete.  This can be particularily problematic when I’ve got several gigs worth of stale ISOs sitting there giving me an error like Error removing file: Permission denied I like computers but I’m not a big fan of when they [...]
