Corporate iPhone use has an unexpected side effect: happier employees. At least, that’s the conclusions drawn by a new report from Forrester Research, as reported by The Apple Blog.

Corporate users have been enjoying the iPhone as a communication device, allowing them to stay in touch with their company’s home base both via E-mail and voice. But employers are liking the device as well, since IT costs have been significantly lower than expected. The 12-page report examines three large companies with significant iPhone use ” Kraft Foods, Oracle, and Amylin Pharmaceuticals. According to Tim Shadler, the reports author, the iPhone helped create a happier, more productive workforce.

There’s nothing in particular about the iPhone’s hardware or software features that helped create this surge in employee satisfaction. Rather, employees’ happiness came from the ability to use the tool they chose. After all, the iPhone is one of the most lusted-after phones on the market right now.

The report does note some downsides: ActiveSync and calendar support on the iPhone are still not up to snuff when compared with the competition, and the device can’t top BlackBerry Enterprise Server when it comes to reliability. Still, with new features like expanded push notifications and copy and paste expected this summer, corporate iPhone use is sure to continue to expand.

In case you missed it, last night’s episode of The Simpons saw Matt Groening’s own brand of satire brought upon the Apple community… um, I mean… Mapple community.

It all starts when Springfield Mall gets a new Mapple store, shaped like a giant cube. “It’s so sterile”, is the first thing Lisa excitedly says upon entering. She goes from display to display looking at the MiPods and MiPhones.

Steve Mobs’, the self-proclaimed “insanely great leader”, makes a live announcement from the Mapple headquarters deep below the sea. Some geeky spectators comment, “he’s a genius” and “he’s like a god who knows what we want” before Mobs even says anything.

Mobs’ says he has something that will “completely change the way you look at everything”. Everyone in the audience now has cash in hand waiting to buy whatever it he says.

Of course, Bart sees this as an opportune moment to hook up a microphone and dub over the lisping Mobs’. “You think you’re cool because you buy a $500 phone with a picture of a fruit on it. Well guess what? They cost 8 bucks to make and I pee on every one!” The hilarity doesn’t stop there, as Bart continues, “I have made of fortune off you chumps and I’ve invested it all in Microsoft. Now my boyfriend Bill Gates and I kiss each other on a pile of your money!”

People are offended and outraged, one employee states “Who dares question the boss we fired 10 years ago and the brought back!” Comic Book Guy is so offended he does his best to recreate the classic 1984 Macintosh commercial (you can see it below), by throwing a sledge hammer which breaks the giant screen.

After getting her Mapple bill in the mail, Lisa travels to Mapple headquarters under the sea in a USB thumbdrive (I’m not making this stuff up). She finds the vein Mobs searching his own name, he geekily rejoices the findings. She’s there to discuss setting up a reduced payment plan for her $1,200 MiPod bill. Mobs then fill Lisa in on the true Mapple slogan “I know our posters say Think Differently, but our real slogan is No Refunds”.

I’m not sure if Steve Jobs did something to piss Matt Groening off, but I’ll be the first to admit… it was very funny.

Initial reports are beginning to leak out of San Francisco that a mysterious object has been seen in the sky, blotting out the stars and staring down ominously at the peaceful inhabitants of The Golden Gate City. An intrepid amateur videographer has posted footage of the mysterious object on Youtube. Star Wars aficionados may recognize the massive moon-like invader as none other than a Death Star – a space station and weapon capable of destroying an entire planet – previously thought to be mere fiction.

We have no way of knowing what it is that the inhabitants of the Death Star want, or even if they are friendly. But one thing is for certain. On the fateful day when we must finally engage our enemy in combat, the greatest weapon available to us will be Jeff Goldblum and his Macintosh of Doom.

Finally! The die app you role players (or lovers of multi-facted dice) have been waiting for has arrived, from MachWerx. It’s Mach Dice and it’s beautiful. The premise is simple. You choose the dice, you make the roll. You can select any type of die you want, up to 100 of them – multiple dice of different sides are available as well. Let’s break it down. The app looks nice, rolls nice and I think is going to be very handy for anyone into role playing who wants to have this at their side -whether it’s to use exslusively or when needed for those who forget thier old Crown Royal bag filled with dice.

If you wish to choose 100d6, you may. In fact, I had to do the obligitory test of 100d100 just to see how it worked – the app did fine as my iPod Touch screen filled up with 100 sided dice. For those curious, I rolled a 4788.

You can also set up multiple dice to roll. Say you want to roll 2d6 and 1d4 at the same time? No worries.

You can also roll physically impossible dice, like a 13 sided die.

The rolling is pretty nice and the app features a neat tilt/view, where if you hold your device at an angle, the dice seem to tilt appropriately. Not bad MachWerx, not bad. You can see an example of multiple dice rolled and the tilt effect below.

The only downside, if you can consider it one, is the cost. At $0.99 it isn’t going to break your bank (and if you think of it this way, it’s less than a cent per die) but it isn’t free. Personally, I think it’s well worth it, if for no other reason than to support the devs who worked on this little app. The graphics could use a bit of an update as well but all in all it’s a great app.

There has never been a shortage of Apple-related rumors on the internet, but many rumors turn out to be true. Here’s one that I sincerely hope is not a complete fabrication.

The Daily Mail reports word from a trusted industry source that Apple, Inc. will be releasing the iPhone Nano in time for the 2008 holiday season. The slimmer, cheaper version of the hugely succesful iPhone will not have internet access and will be limited to the 3G network.

The iPhone Nano will probably be announced later this year, possibly at the Apple Expo taking place in Paris in mid-September.

Now that the new iPhone is sweeping the nation (hey, almost 0.0034% of the US population has one) there are lots of reasons to go pick one up. I unfortunately will not be doing so for a variety of reasons, mostly centering on green things that fit into pockets and don’t come out of anyone’s nose. Since I’m not getting one, I’ve sat back and picked through my . . . thoughts to compile a list of 10 reasons why I’m glad not to have a new iPhone!

My fingerprints are ugly.

I Don’t have to blog about my new iPhone.

I enjoy dragging out my laptop on the train.

Steve Jobs won’t get another turtleneck out of me!

I know I’d just drop the damned thing.

Google’s Dream phone will be available any second. Really.

I’m sexy enough.

I don’t want to purchase Spore fore the PC and iPhone.

Multi-touch on photos feels to much like squishing my loved one’s faces.

Mimes can’t use it, neither will I.

Neener Neener Apple.

APC has a great article up on the top 10 reasons to hate the new iPhone 3g. As much as I kind of want to, I really don’t hate the new iPhone. In fact, I’d love to have one.

My favorite reason cited: No Adobe Flash support. Ugh.

Undeniably, the iPhone has the best web browser of any phone on the market. But when you hit a web page with Adobe Flash in it, you’ll just get an empty space with a ‘missing plugin’ icon. Apple says Flash would run too slowly on the iPhone, but in reality, it’s probably more to do with Apple wanting to promote its competing web app development technology, Sproutcore.

Apple realises the ‘mobile web’ is at a tipping point… if it can get enough momentum behind developers coding sites specifically for the iPhone, it will help sales of the iPhone along in the long term. (That said, unlike Flash, Sproutcore is an open standard that theoretically works in any web browser that supports Javascript, so it could be widely supported by all handset makers if their phone web browsers got better.)

Who the hell uses Sproutcore?

After reading the following article, I feel empowered to finally branch free and give my computer a whole new persona that will hopefully enable us to live happily ever after. -Dawn

Time to dump Windows?
Can it be done? Is it the right time? Find out what it’ll take to finally switch to desktop Mac OS X or Linux

How realistic is a switch to Linux or Apple’s Mac OS X? For some users — often technically savvy people such as engineers, consultants, designers and CTOs — it is clearly an option that already works quite well. In the past year, running Mac OS X or Linux as your default OS has been made easier by the capability to run Windows in a virtual machine, giving you access to both Windows-only applications and Web sites that rely on Microsoft’s Internet Explorer-only ActiveX technology. But in a business environment, switching to a Mac or Linux PC may not be quite as easy.

The Mac OS X option
Of the plausible alternatives to Windows, Apple’s Mac OS X has the largest market share and history. And Macs are indeed popping up more frequently even within IT circles — I’ve seen more MacBook Pros in the hands of CTOs and IT execs at conferences in the past year more than I’ve seen Mac notebooks in such venues ever. Although there are no real numbers on just the business adoption of Macs, it’s clear that Apple is in growth mode, gaining an increasing proportion of all new computer sales for more than a year now.

InfoWorld’s Yager has chronicled the adventures of one PC user who switched to the Mac OS, showing that for an individual, the conversion was ultimately a rewarding one. The TechWeb site has also provided a good guide on how to make the switch to Mac OS X.

A key tool for any Mac OS X switcher is a virtual machine to run Windows for those apps and Web sites that require it. Both Parallels Desktop 3.0 and EMC VMware’s Fusion software will do the trick, as InfoWorld’s comparative review has shown.

Although Macs are compatible with most typical hardware, such as monitors and drives, fitting a Mac into an enterprise’s management systems and ERP applications can be a different story. Yager’s Mac Enterprise blog and the Mac Enterprise user group both provide advice on managing Macs in a traditional IT environment.

The Linux option
The more technically inclined may be attracted to Linux, the most popular form of desktop Unix. Linux desktops typically are challenged by limited hardware compatibility (due to lack of drivers), limited application options, and user interfaces that require active participation to get work done, which tends to keep Linux away from the general user population. But those who work with a Linux server all day may find that using it on the desktop as well actually makes their lives easier.

Just as Mac users need occasional access to Windows, so do Linux users. Because Linux distributions run on Windows-compatible hardware, it’s straightforward to use desktop virtualization software, such as Parallels Workstation, Sun’s (formerly Innotek’s) VirtualBox, and EMC VMware’s Workstation software, to provide access to both environments.

Although some enterprises have committed to wide Linux deployment — such as automaker Peugeot Citroën’s plans to install 20,000 Novell Suse Linux desktops — most have left Linux to the engineering and development staff.

InfoWorld Enterprise Desktop blogger Randall Kennedy argues that desktop Linux is doomed to remain a tiny niche OS, given the Linux community’s lack of interest in providing a UI that regular people could use. Kennedy tried to spend a week working on nothing but the Ubuntu distribution of Linux but gave up on the fifth day.

But Kennedy’s take isn’t the last word on desktop Linux. Frequent InfoWorld contributor Neil McAllister put together a special report on how to move from Windows to Linux, concluding that the effort was not as hard as you might think.

Who’s right? As with any platform choice, they both may be. A one-size-fits-all approach may be unrealistic. And that likely explains why many businesses will have a mix, dominated by Windows XP today (and perhaps Vista in a few years) but not exclusively tied to Microsoft’s OS.

I can understand the concern of course If we’re talking about the 16 GB, that’s approximately $400.00 per phone. Now calculate that with 1.3 million and the scene from Elizabethtown comes to mind.

Phil DeVoss: “I have no rule-book for this situation. They tell me we’re about to lose 972 million dollars. I am ill-equipped in the philosophies of failure.

How do I make the concept of 972 million dollars more real to you? Well. It’s the operating budget of a mid-sized country. A small civilization. It’s big. It’s so big that you could round it off to… a billion dollars.

I cry a lot lately.”

Where’s the iPhone?

“Where are Apple’s missing iPhones?

Discrepancy in Apple’s iPhone sales figures could indicate a ‘significant’ number of unlocked devices

By Jonny Evans, Macworld.co.uk
January 25, 2008
Apple claims slightly over 3.7 million iPhones were sold in 2007 — yet AT&T this week revealed it ended the year with “just at or sightly under 2 million iPhone customers.”

That 2 million has been boosted somewhat by an estimated 300,000 to 400,000 sales in Europe, analysts believe.

The discrepancy is that the 3.7 million iPhones Apple says it has sold and the estimated 2.4 million sold by its network partners still leaves 1.3 million of the devices unaccounted for.”

Fret not! Mystery is solved.

“Half A Million “Missing” iPhones? Found! (AAPL)
Dan Frommer | January 25, 2008 2:10 PM
Don’t get caught up in the hype around hundreds of thousands of “missing” iPhones. We know where they are: They’ve been purchased by AT&T and Apple’s European carrier partners, who will resell them to customers.

How’d we figure it out? By listening to AT&T’s Q4 earnings call, where the company explained that it has phones it bought from Apple but had yet to sell itself in its inventory.

Also, we just read Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster’s new note, which walks through the math on the “missing phones”: At the end of 2007, Apple said it had sold 3.7 million iPhones. AT&T said yesterday it had activated about 2 million during that same period, leaving 1.7 million iPhones unaccounted for. Munster estimates 350,000 phones were sold in Europe, and that 25% of Apple’s U.S. iPhone sales — 838,000 — were to people who bought the devices to “unlock” them, either to use on T-Mobile, on foreign carriers, or as $400 iPods. That leaves 512,000 “missing” phones — retail inventory.”

Phew, now I can *finally* fall asleep and put my sleuth kit away.

Wow. Looks like Apple is starting to come under a bit of flack from the user community over Leopard. Check out this PC Magazine article by Oliver Rist where he details what’s going wrong and compares it to that other software giant.

Let’s see, Tiger crashed—oh yeah, NEVER. Ten months and I’m installing everything from production-level Office for the Mac 2004 to 0.x releases of VLC, Seashore, and Ecto—even betas of Firefox and Parallels. Whatever my nerdy little heart desires. I’ve had those early apps crash, but Tiger never faltered.

A month of using Leopard with the same software I had under Tiger and the OS has dumped six times. That’s six cold reboots for Oliver. Apple isn’t even honest enough to admit that Leopard is crashing: The OS just grays out my desktop and pops up a dialog box telling me I’ve got to reboot. Like the whole thing is my fault. I even snapped a picture of it. After all, I HAD PLENTY OF CHANCES! And all my complaints, mirrored by online forum traffic, are the same complaints I heard about Vista when it first reared its unbaked head.

Ouch! Click here for the rest of the article.

Apple on Monday released updates to its QuickTime media player software to repair eight serious security vulnerabilities.

The vulnerabilities expose both Macs and Windows PCs to cyberattack, Apple said in a security alert. In all cases, an attacker could craft a malicious file which, when opened with QuickTime, could give the miscreant full control over a computer running the software, Apple said.

The problems lie in the way QuickTime handles a number of formats. The security updates repair problems in the way the software handles QuickTime, MIDI, 3GP, PICT and QTIF files, according to the Apple alert.

Along with the fixes, the latest version also includes some functionality improvements, Apple said. The update is available for download from Apple’s Web site or through the Apple update feature, the company said.
