Video Game – Movie Transitions: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Last week we saw what I can only consider to be a travesty against the forces of the universe. I’m not talking about the near hit we could have taken from an asteroid, but the release of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-li. In fact, I’d almost rather take the asteroid than to see this [...]

Spore – finally a game to get excited about

With the launch of Spore coming soon, I'm finally starting to get excited about a video game again!  It's been a while since there's been a video game release that truly sparked a lot of interest in my gaming life.  There's been the occasional left field surprise like Sins of a Solar Empire which I've enjoyed playing very much but most of the recent big gaming releases have been more of the same.  Prettier sure, graphically some have been amazing - but it's still first person shooter or real time strategy.  Will Spore be different?

Elves, orcs, a muddy playing field and a spiked ball. Just another day in football.

I was a huge fan of the tabletop game by GDW when I was in college.  We had a whole tourny going with a ladder leading to playoffs and weekly team reports.  We even created an in house buy system so winning teams earned money towards better players and more skills.

eVGA’s GTX 260 (896 megs of superclocked video goodness) relatively cheap

eVGA's GTX 260 video card is now available from NewEgg at the low, low price of $279.99.  I just happen to have here a mail in rebate form (pdf) that will also get you $30 off of that price.  So if you can wait for the rebate to process your total cost will have been $249.00.  But wait, there's more!  Use coupon code VGA724X25 and chop another $25 off of the price.  Now you're talking at $225.  You've got to buy this by the 31st of July to take advantage of the mail in rebate.

Quantum of Solace Gameplay Trailer Impressions

Video game adaptations of movies are notoriously awful, as are movie adaptations of video games.  Case in point: the Spiderman games suffered from clunky controls and the Tomb Raider movies were overly dramatized and unfaithful to the video game character designs.  Games like these are usually shovelware (that is, games that are produced quickly and cheaply in order to get the game in stores as quickly as possible to take advantage of hype).  Even though these games are notoriously bad, affiliation with popular movies usually causes them to receive fairly good sales results based on name-recognition.

He’s Baaaaack. Duke Nukem gets official

But probably not in the way you're expecting.  Apogee, the software publisher from bygone days is set to make their return by releasing several new Duke Nukem missions to consoles like the DS or PSP.  Here's the official news

DIABLO 3 – Nick knows and now you do too – a compilation of all things Diablo 3

I’ve got to point you all to Nick Breckon’s Shacknews feature on Diablo 3.  Nick got frustrated after watching a bunch of interviews and realizing that no one had compiled all of the information in one spot.  So he did this for us, to which we are forever indebted to him and should probably buy [...]

Sins of a Solar Empire – easily the best space strategy game in a long time.

Sins of a Solar Empire is one of those rare games that has the ability to really capture my attention, draw me in and keep me in front of the PC for long periods of time. I'm a sucker for galactic expansion games and even though I don't go bonkers over RTS games in general, this one in particular has just the right blend of strategy and real time to keep me happily clicking away. Sins is really an RT4X Game – Real Time, eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate.
